(Un)popular Opinion: How to Be a Good Audience Member
It's halfway through 2018, y'all! And this internet space hasn't been touched in a while. I was thinking I could start just putting my random thoughts and opinions out there, popular or otherwise. Just because. Maybe reading the totally random ramblings and maybe rants of some random girl can brighten your day a little, and if this is just like every other blog, oh well. If not for your entertainment, then for my own amusement. See? I'm rambling already.
First, I want to talk about being a good audience member. What do you define as a good audience member? I'll tell you what I have a feeling it's not: ladies who sit behind you and talk/loud whisper during the ENTIRE opera, including the overture that you were excited to enjoy. They remark about all sorts of things throughout the production, and they also include little winces and things when something bad happens. I do appreciate that they seem to enjoy what they're watching, but why not let your fellow audience members also enjoy the production the way it's meant to be presented, senza additional remarks and sounds?
Furthermore, let's talk about candies. I sooooo appreciate the announcements before shows that not only caution audience members to silence/turn off cell phones/pagers/other noise making devices, but also suggest that all candies (or mints or whatever) be unwrapped before the show begins. But speaking of those announcements before shows, since when did they start saying "put your phones on vibrate" instead of silencing or turning off altogether? I feel like the vibration of a phone is still gonna be heard, at least by audience members in the near vicinity of it during a quieter scene.
Finally, I think it's important to rely on the nature and genre of the production you're seeing and to also follow the lead of your fellow audience members to know how one might conduct oneself at that particular event. You can never go wrong with staying quiet and clapping when everyone else does, if you're not sure! But as with all things, there is a balance--for example, I love having an enthusiastic audience when I'm on stage, depending on what I'm doing.
Anyway, maybe you think I'm a terrible person now for speaking with such little delicacy. I assure you, it's all good fun.
Come back next time for my thoughts on another subject!
